Methodology: aggregate analysis of public Google Business Profile data for dental practices across 277 UK towns and cities, 2026. Ratings weighted by practice count.

The review gap: loved, but invisible

UK dental practices are genuinely well-liked. The national average rating across all 6,899 practices is 4.57 stars, and 76.9% of UK towns have a local dental average of 4.5★ or higher. Patients are happy.

And yet the average practice has just 103 Google reviews. The best-reviewed practices in our dataset have thousands. The difference isn’t the quality of the dentistry — it’s whether the practice systematically asks happy patients for a review. That’s the review gap, and it’s the cheapest growth lever in UK dentistry.

Closing the gap: what the numbers say works

If patients are happy (4.57★) but reviews are scarce (103 on average), the whole problem is the ask. Two numbers decide how well the ask converts:

~98%
WhatsApp open rate — patients actually see the request and can reply in the app they already use.
~20%
Email open rate — four in five review requests are never even opened, so the review is never left.

The proof that the gap is closable: Deepcar Dental Care had collected 108 reviews in eight years — roughly the dataset average. After switching on automated WhatsApp review collection, they added 134 more in 17 days, publicly verifiable on their Google profile. See the case study →

The data, answered

What is the average Google rating of a UK dental practice?

Based on our 2026 analysis of 6,899 UK dental practices, the national average Google rating is 4.57 stars (weighted by practice). 76.9% of UK towns have a local dental average of 4.5 stars or higher. UK dental practices are very well liked — the issue isn't satisfaction, it's review volume.

How many Google reviews does the average UK dental practice have?

Just 103. Across the 6,899 practices we analysed, there were 710,656 Google reviews in total — an average of about 103 per practice. Yet the best-reviewed practices in the dataset have thousands. That gap is almost entirely down to whether a practice systematically asks for reviews, not how good the dentistry is.

Why do dental practices have so few reviews if patients are happy?

Because happy patients leave the surgery and get on with their day. The only people who reliably leave a review unprompted are the unhappy ones. Unless a practice asks every happy patient at the right moment, on a channel they actually open, most five-star experiences never become five-star reviews. That's the review gap.

How many Google reviews should a dental practice aim for?

More than your local competitors, and growing faster than them. With the average UK practice sitting at 103 reviews, even reaching a few hundred puts a practice well ahead locally. Google's local Map Pack rewards both review volume and velocity (how fast fresh reviews arrive), so steady weekly reviews matter as much as the total.

Does the messaging channel affect how many reviews you collect?

Significantly. Email review requests are opened roughly 20–25% of the time; WhatsApp messages are opened around 98% and read within minutes. Since every patient who never opens the request is a review you'll never get, the channel sets the ceiling. This is why WhatsApp-based collection consistently out-performs email and SMS for UK practices.
